Bintan Souvenir and Craft made in Bintan

Bintan Souvenir and Crafts made in Bintan and other parts of Indonesia with artistic design, high quality and competitive prices

Pandan handicrafts are made in Bintan by craftwomen from Sebong Lagoi Village and Sribintan Village. The skill of making and designing products were developed during Bintan Ecotourism Venture Project supported by DFID UK, PT Bintan Resort Cakrawala and the Local Government of Bintan. BEVEP’s objective is to strengthen self-help capabilities of low-income families in Bintan in the ecotourism sector. Through education and on-the-job training programs, the project creates livelihood opportunities with and for the local communities, protecting natural and cultural resources of Bintan Island.

The craftswomen are collecting the pandan leaves from plants in the wild. Only the young leaves are cut so the plant will naturally regenerate. The young leaves are sliced in fine strips and sorted for further processing. Later the weavers will produce basic pandan mats of standard size or roll the leaves into pandan ropes for other designs. This is followed by the coloring process, in which the pandan mats are placed in drums with water-based colors. After drying the colored mats are shaped into the final product, for instance a place mat or a jewelry box. Final color touch ups are applied to assure a product of high quality. The whole process from harvesting of raw materials to finished product is handled by the craftswomen making this a truly community-based handicraft product, made in Bintan Island.

There are three different types of natural padan species in Bintan Island. Pandan grows near sandy beaches and rocky headlands along the coastline of Bintan Island or in the freshwater and peat swamps further inland. Some pandan species have thorny (“duri”) leaves, others are smooth. The women of Sungai Kecil traditionally use pandan to produce colourful floor mats, called “Tikar Ikat”. You can find them in their houses in the village. The fragrant pandan leaves are also used to flavor traditional dishes such as cake “kue”, making padan one of the most versatile natural products used.

A wide range of pandan handicraft designs is available for your choice, varying from modern Zen-inspired designs to rustic looks. Bags and Hats, Placemats, Napkin holders and Coasters Available in round and square designs with fitting coasters and napkin holders, colors in dark brown and natural beige.
